Reportable events

The Nuclear Safety Officer and Reporting Ordinance (Atomrechtliche Sicherheitsbeauftragten- und Meldeverordnung – AtSMV) of 14 October 1992 (Federal Law Gazette (BGBl.) I, 1766) established a legal obligation for operators of nuclear facilities to report events and incidents (from operational problems to incidents and accidents) to the regulatory authorities. The purpose of the formal reporting procedure is to monitor the safety status of these facilities and to improve this status with the information gained from the reported events. The reports and the resulting sharing of experience at the national level provide an essential basis for early detection of possible faults at the plant in question and to prevent and detect similar errors at other facilities. Reportable events are assigned to the various categories in accordance with the initial engineer’s assessment.
